2012: The Story Straight From NASA

by on Nov.15, 2009, under Other Stuff

People have asked me lately about what I thought of the 2012/Mayan Calendar thing… At the time I hadn’t really heard anything about the theories or ideas to have an opinion. Now, however, there was a special on SyFy channel (channel 122 on DISH Network) that I’ve watched that talked about these theories and I can say with clarity and confidence that this is a load of CRAP. The only important thing about December 21, 2012 is the winter solstice — The sun will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees South Latitude).

Also, NASA has this press release out written by Don Yeomans, a senior research scientist at NASA. Here’s some of what he said:

There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012. (Bold added)

You can read the rest of his November 10th news release here: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/yoemans20091110.html

There was one guy that my brother (as we were watching this special) just referred to as "the idiot" — reminded me of an episode of NCIS where "Ducky" referred to a local guard/cop guy as "the imbecile" because of his lack of common sense when working with a crime scene. My brother called this guy "the idiot" because of his apparent lack of general common sense. There is no way that anything short of an object the size of the moon hitting the earth will create such madness as will supposedly happen on 12/21/2012.

The only important gravitational tugs experienced by the Earth are due to the moon and sun. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The moon is keeping the earth’s rotation stable. One theory holds that the earth is simply going to "topple over" — an event that is absolutely impossible with the moon in orbit. If the moon were to fly off one day, it may start spinning like that… But the moon’s not going anywhere.

The predictions of doomsday or dramatic changes on December 21, 2012 are all false. Incorrect doomsday predictions have taken place several times in each of the past several centuries. Readers should bear in mind what Carl Sagan noted several years ago; "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, the burden of proof is on the people making these claims. Where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and all the passionate, persistent and profitable assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

So let’s just leave this behind… Summary: 2012 is just another Y2K.

NASA did a Question and Answer page where they state:

Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won’t be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we’re frequently asked regarding 2012.

Nothing’s to happen. Period. NASA also gives some other links for more info and theories and some of the claims behind the theories.

Good old Y2K. Thought my computers were going to blow up lol. Thankfully never did. A few little annoyances on the Windows 3.1 file system, but that was about it. I never knew a lot about the science or religious background on this to form a good opinion. Sure I’ve thought about this. Do I expect it to be Doomsday? No. But really, what can I do about it anyways? So why worry? I’m not Will Smith, I can’t save the world. But Hollywood will and already has made a lot of money off of this.
