The Year As I See It…

by Adam on Dec.31, 2009, under Other Stuff, Personal Stuff

Wow, this is my first "Year as I see it" post in 3 years! It’s amazing. Here’s the last one I wrote: http://www.adamh.us/2007/the-year-as-i-see-it

So, how does 2010 look? It has The Scripters doing well, continuing school, further mayhem and chaos from the president, and late next year we even have an election for congress. That election is November 2nd.

The year 2010 promises to be an exciting year. And a busy year. I have to get busy in order to make The Scripters profitable. 2010 is going to have several projects for me at the beginning of the year, as well as my new computer. Though that won’t be complete for a while. This computer will be turned into a Linux server and become our test server for developing websites. Right now it’s got 3 operating systems on it: Windows 98, Windows XP, Slackware Linux. The new computer will be configured with Windows XP Professional x86, Windows 7 Professional x64, and Slackware x64. I may even throw in Slackware x86 next to the x64, too… I’m still not sure exactly what I’ll be doing with it.

One thing I need to figure out is what I’m going to do with the new "local" web page: http://local.thescripters.com. If anyone has comments, let me know. I haven’t decided exactly what we’re going to use it for.

2010 could also mark the end of the Mission Kim Possible era, with the group possible closing on January 14th: MKP’s 6-year anniversary. There’s low activity, and not really enough to justify a whole group. The few that are active could easily move to SDS Forum and have the same conversation.

Now a look back on 2009. All in all 2009 has been a good year. We got The Scripters redesigned, AdamH’us went through a couple of facelifts, and The Scripters seems to be doing well with a few projects available in the near future. 2009 also brought about the ridiculous theories about 2012.

So, how does the new year look for you? Better figure it out. In the United States, it’s only 11 hours before everyone starts celebrating it on the east coast. :D

Enjoy the new year! Happy 2010! :)

Merry Christmas!

by Adam on Dec.24, 2009, under Other Stuff

Just wanted to tell everyone to have a great new year… It’s 41 minutes into Christmas Eve right now, and I wish everyone a very merry Christmas with lots of cheer and giving.

Make sure to watch the faces of those you give gifts to… ;) Unless they’re like me and don’t show much emotion most of the time, anyway… :P Then it won’t do much good, will it? Anyway, enjoy yourselves. Stay safe… Even though it’s not the 4th of July, those lights can be pretty nasty! :P

And maybe tomorrow (Friday) I’ll post up some of the things I got (maybe)… :P

Nobel Peace Prize? Obama? What in the world?

by Adam on Dec.10, 2009, under Other Stuff, Personal Stuff

Tell how in the world Obama qualifies for the Nobel Peace prize! He hasn’t done anything! It’s ridiculous! He hasn’t been in office long enough to do anything! It’s all a load of crap. At least he said for himself that there are other people more deserving. That’s one point for him. But he’s going to send in 30,000 more troops. I agree they’re needed, but how does that qualify him for the PEACE prize? How does sending in 30,000 troops qualify as peace making? What are they thinking?!

The only stuff he’s actually done (or tried to do) has been in the USA and hasn’t been that great for the country. Let alone the world. What’s up with that? I don’t get it… The main reason for giving it to him is because he’s the first black president of the United States… SO WHAT?! That is NOT a good enough reason for him to get it. It just isn’t. He and his wife badmouth their own country while abroad… He’s not a nice guy. He’s not to be trusted. I didn’t vote for him. Had I been around to, I wouldn’t have. This whole thing sucks.

Anyway, I highly disagree with giving him that prize. I think he’s undeserving. But he got it. We have to deal with it, now. What can we do? Do our best to get our representatives and senators to listen to us. That’s about it.

The Scripters Go Open Source

by Adam on Dec.07, 2009, under Other Stuff, Personal Stuff, Projects, TheScripters, Web Design

Okay, it didn’t really take a whole lot of thought… Just a matter of finding enough open source software to do everything we need to do. Here’s how it’s going to break down:

  1. Slackware Linux on our test server (our production server already runs Linux)
  2. Filezilla FTP client for FTP access (Filezilla server for Windows FTP)
  3. GIMP/Paint.NET for graphics
  4. OpenOffice.org for documents (uploaded to site as PDF)
  5. Firefox Web Browser — that’s what we’ll be designing for
  6. PHP programming — no ASP or other commercial language
  7. SciTE for script editing (at least in Linux — in Windows I have a freeware)

Note: This is only what we’ll use for production of websites. This is what we’ll use as The Scripters. As web applications (such as blog or forum software) we’ll use open source applications for those applications that we don’t create ourselves (such as WordPress, phpBB, or osCommerce).

Much of this software will also be available on systems we build for clients. It’s going to be quite a process to complete this haul-over, but we’ve got to start somewhere.

Comments are welcome. If you have other suggestions, we’re fully open to them. :)

Multi-booting Steps

by Adam on Dec.04, 2009, under Other Stuff, Personal Stuff, TheScripters

In the next few weeks, I hope to finish building my new computer to run Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, at which point I’ll be able to post a new page about getting a multi-boot system with Windows 7. At this point, however, all I can say is that the process is enough different that the exact procedure I used for XP won’t work. Windows 7 has too many differences in its boot sequence.

First of all, it doesn’t use the old boot.ini that NT/2000/XP used.

For now, I’m simply going to refer you to this site: http://www.multibooters.co.uk/ where you can get more information in more detail. They explain pretty well about multi-booting, the hazards, some of the benefits, and even some boot managers that work with Vista (and thus potentially with Windows 7, since they’re basically identical in boot sequence).

Of course, the easiest way for an end-user to get a multi-boot system is to take their computer to a local guru who knows how and can do it in a flash. I dual-booted Windows 7 RC with XP Pro for a client. If you ever call on TheScripters to build you a computer, you might as well ask us to dual-boot with Linux.. The best of both worlds, yo! ;)

Enjoy!
